Why J261 Online Journalism?

In this advanced skills class, students will explore non-linear methods of storytelling and how Web-based tools can enhance their written work. In addition to building existing skills, they will use photography, video, audio and other multimedia tools to create story packages for an online magazine.

Through exercises and discussion about online journalism, the course builds on skills acquired in J200 Reporting, Writing and Editing I and J210 Visual Communications.

The objectives of the course are the development of an understanding of how online reporting and presentation differs from other media, and to learn to use some of the multimedia tools that support online storytelling. As in other journalism classes, students will continue to hone their writing and reporting skills as they gather news for an online course project.
