Grammar SOS > Acronyms

You should make it a practice to spell out names on first reference, then use acronyms in later references.

For example, spell out IU on first reference. For the e-zines, we know they will be held on the IU server, but it is conceivable that someone will land on the site from a search and won't recognize "IU."

Do not use this method:

Just use the acronym on a later reference as long as it is clear that this refers to name.

Exceptions: common acronyms, such as ABC-TV, AT&T. AP suggests letting context be your guide in cases such as FBI, CIA, GOP.
