How do I start online research?
Search engines:
- Information Literacy: Search Strategies walks you through the search process and helps you locate the best engine for the job
- Here are tips and tools I've assembled to better use search engines, specifically Google
- Power Searching for Anyone from Search Engine Watch lists dozens of ways to better use Web searches, including Googe. Be sure to click on "Search Engine Math" and "Boolean Searching" for additional help.
- Evaluating Web sites
Starting places:
- NewsInfo from IU Office of Communications
- News and current events links from IU Libraries. To access, go to IU libraries, Search by Subject, News and Current Events. You'll get a long list of links to archives such as the New York Times. Click on Access World News to find local and regional archives.
- Internet Public Library, organized by topic
- Newswise offers leads to recent stories from a variety of beats
- Eureka Alert offers recent news articles by topic
- Searching blogs: Search engines, advice
- Power Reporting offers a list of beats with links to resources.
Meetings, lectures and events:
- Events at IU are listed by category and by date (searchable)
- IDS Happenings calendar is searchable and compiles events from campus and community.
- Herald-Times events and meetings usually are listed on various calendars. Search by topic, or search by calendar/listing name: Out and About, Homes Calendar, Datebook, Talk About, On Exhibit, Arts Watch.
- Monroe County Public Library provides meeting space for community groups as well as hosts its own programming. The library also has a database of community groups, complete with contact info.
