Some of you have indicated a burning desire to camp -- and lucky for you, there are thousands of acres of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area are at your disposal. There are numerous camps around Sun Valley, Stanley and all along the Salmon River. In fact, this is about the only place left in the world where campers are allowed to pull off the road by the river and pull out their lawn chairs for the night.
There are developed sites, too, with specific spots for your tents or campers, and water and occasionally, toilets, are available. These fill fast during the summer around Redfish Lake, so grab whatever is open as you troll around and don't be picky. If there are no sites, there are plenty of overflow camps along the river. You can hang out in one of those while keeping your eye out for a superior spot somewhere else. At some point, though, you have to just forget about finding The Perfect Camp Spot and enjoy your vacation. (Besides, there are no truly bad spots -- just those that may be a little further away from your reveling relatives).
There is a service that allows campers to reserve spots at a few of the camps around the lake.
Reserve USA lists these few camps along with available dates. These fill fast, and the last time I looked, there was very little left at Redfish. When you go to this site, it will be hard to tell which camps are around the lake unless you already are familiar with the area.
Lucky for you, you have relatives that know all about it. Here are the camps to check out that are around Redfish Lake proper: Glacier Bay, Point and Outlet. These and other Forest Service sites range from $8-14 per night. Camping is free in the overflow areas or along the river in undeveloped sites.
There are some commercial camps, too, that are along the highway but still offer lovely views. These have full hook-ups and are in the upper end of the price range ($20+ per night). Find out about them at the Stanley web site.
