This is the quiz that tested each contestant's knowledge of family lore. We're including what we believe are the answers (let us know if you disagree!).
1. Who was the first family member to fall victim to crime in his new homeland of America?
Anton Broili
2. Name the two sour Lemons who left the two sweet Lemons at the movie theatre to find their way
home all by themselves one cold, dark and scary day. *Hint: all four are pictured here during Christmas, 1938. (Bonus points to those who remember what movie was showing).
Bryant Lemon and Bill Watts, sour Lemons; Margie and Marilyn Roth, sweet Lemons.
3. Picture it: 1941, a scene from a Rockwell painting. All the little cousins huddled into one bed as Orange Lemon read them a Christmas story. Who ruined the moment?
Bill Watts and his gastrointestinal eruption (Bryant brought pictures of just such a Christmas story evening)
4. Name Charlotte Lemon Roth's favorite movie.
"Treasure of the Sierra Madre." At least, that's what she told Gena in 1986.
5. Identify the Lemons
celebrating Christmas 1951.
From left: Margie W., Veva, Jay, Bonita Hulse (Charlotte and Margie's cousin), Grandma Lemon, Hank (Bonita's husband), Margie R., Marilyn, W.O., Charlotte, Bryant, Bill, Tony (Bonita's son) and Rich.
6. Who served as a delegate from Idaho to the Electoral College? What state office did he later run for? What party? (For bonus points: what childhood friend of his turned up years later as a political foe?)
William Lemon ran for Secretary of State on the Democratic ticket. Ira Masters, his childhood playmate in Newton, Kansas, was an early opponent in that race.
7. Name the Lemon who "claimed" to be the first white child born in the state of Idaho.
Charlotte Roth
8. Here are Julius Broili, Sr., Margaret Broili Lemon and Eva Howard Broili. What business was Julius in and where?
The appliance business in Reno, Nev.
9. Name William Lemon's newspaper.
Adams County Leader
10. Charlotte Roth and Margie Watts once plopped a small child down in the living room floor and ordered her to "talk southern" to amuse their guests. Who was the tiny tot?
Kari Amundsen, who now is performing the same party trick for her new California friends.
11. Which Lemon descendant is sitting in the basket?
Little Richard Roth
12. Who owned the "President's Chair" and who was allowed to sit in it?
Margie Watts, and only a person who actually has been a president of something.
13. What method of conveyance was used in winter to slide down the hill to the outhouse at the Watts' "shack" at Ketchum?
The sliders' backsides
14. Identify this "homestead."
The William and Margarethe Lemon home in Council, Idaho
15. Name the Lemon connection to these famous people: Averill Harriman, Eli Lilly, Ernest Hemingway and Vladimir Horowitz.
Averill shows up in a Sun Valley Christmas picture, Grandpa Lemon's aunt married Eli Lilly, Chuck Atkinson hunted with Ernest, and Vladimir played the piano in Twin Falls.
BONUS: What is a "guberif," and why don't you want to be one?
Guberif is "firebug" spelled backwards and you don't want to be one for obvious reasons. This used to be painted on blacktop all over Idaho but is rare to see these days.
